Creative culinary wizard
Meet Kåre, the culinary wizard of our longhouse kitchen. With a keen eye for flavors and a passion for Viking cuisine, Kåre brings warmth and creativity to every dish he creates. Hailing from a family of renowned chefs in the neighboring village of Hrafnsborg, Kåre learned the secrets of traditional Norse cooking from a young age. His friendly smile and hearty laugh welcome all to gather around the hearth and indulge in the delights of good food.

MEDIEVAL EGG CAKE
This medieval twist on Yorkshire pudding is perfect for any occasion. With a fluffy egg batter made from common ingredients, it’s surprisingly quick and easy to make—so quick, I whipped it together while my one-year-old son watched from his high chair, and he didn’t fuss from boredom once.
You can use any ovenproof pan; a frying pan is recommended, but I used a cast iron and it worked well! Adjust the crispiness to your liking, and enjoy it warm with honey or alongside a juicy meat dish.
I originally made this Anglo-Saxon dish using the recipe from The Last Kingdom cookbook Uhtred’s Feast by Bernard Cornwell with Suzanne Pollak. While not strictly Viking, it’s a nod to the culinary adventures of the Norse era, making it a perfect addition to your kitchen repertoire!

Steps:
- Preheat the oven to 450 F.
- Mix all ingredients except butter to create the egg cake batter.
- Melt the butter in an ovenproof cooking pan.
- Pour the egg cake batter into the pan, then transfer to the oven and bake for 15 minutes until it sets.
Ingredients:
- 3 eggs
- 8 tbsp whole milk
- 4 tbsp flour
- 2 tbsp butter
- pinch of salt as desired
- pinch of cinnamon, cloves, or nutmeg as desired
